How does an e-car charger work?

The benefits in a nutshell:
  • Charge your car fast at home
  • Use solar power for charging
  • Higher self consumption of solar energy
  • Also works without a solar system
  • Greener driving

Cleaner driving (with a solar system)

Charging an electric car with the power from your own photovoltaic system (PV system) is a rewarding experience. After all, a PV system with an output of 5 kWp can supply up to 5000 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity per year. If your electric car has an energy consumption of 17 kWh/100 km, then you are driving almost 2,500 km per month emission-free. So charging your electric car with PV power not only takes the strain off your ecological conscience, but your wallet too.

Higher solar power self consumption

Changing your EV with solar energy is not only the cleanest option available, it is also a great way to higher self consumption of solar power. Using less grid energy and more solar power is obviously a greener way to drive. In addition, a higher self consumption of solar saves you money compared to what you pay for grid power, even during low tariff hours. A solar battery could help you increase the self consumption even more and allow you to charge your car at night.

Fast charging

All our charging stations are fast chargers. This means you will be able to charge your car much faster than you would be able to with a simple wall socket plug. The actual time it takes to charge your car depends on the size of the battery, the power load of your house, and how much solar power you use. Our solar experts will help you choose the right fit for your EV and solar system.

Why do I need an EV charger?

Charging your EV with a charger is safer, faster, cheaper, and greener. Safer, because the charger is smart and will control the flow of energy through the cable. Fast, because charging with a charger is about eight times faster than with just a cable. And last but not least affordable, because you can charge your car at off-peak times when electricity is cheaper than normal. Finally, if you have a solar system, you can use your charger to charge your car with pure solar power.

Can I charge my car with pure solar energy?

If you have a solar system and and smart charger (all chargers solar by I.ON are smart chargers), you can charge your car with solar power, either directly from the solar system or, if you have one, a solar battery. If there is not enough solar power or if you want to boost the charging time of your car, you can also use grid power up to 32A, depending on the load power of your home.

Do I need a solar system to install a smart charger?

You don't need a solar system to install a smart charger. If install a smart charger without a solar system, you can always connect it at a later point if you decide to go solar in the future.

Does a smart charger impact the ideal size of my solar system?

With a smart charger you can use solar power to charge your vehicle. Depending on ho much you plan to charge your car at home and depending on the size of your solar battery (if applicable), you should consider installing a larger solar system than you would have otherwise done. I.ON's solar experts will help you size your system to perfectly fit your needs.
