A heat pump water heater proves that efficiency and quiet operation go together. A small built-in heat pump captures the heat of the ambient air in the room where it stands, a cellar, a laundry room, a plant room, and transfers it to the water in the tank. With a typical COP of 3 to 3.5, every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed produces 3 to 3.5 kWh of heat.
The result: around 70 % less electricity and close to CHF 600 a year saved compared with a conventional electric water heater, and more sustainably than oil or gas. Common capacities run from 200 to 300 litres, enough to cover a household of 2 to 5 people with a single heating cycle a day.
Installation is straightforward: the unit connects to the existing water pipes, without major works. The upfront investment is higher than an electric water heater, between CHF 4,000 and 7,000 installed depending on capacity and configuration, but the system proves particularly profitable over time.
