The canton of Neuchâtel has two distinct faces: the lakeside shore (Neuchâtel, Boudry, Peseux, Cortaillod) with its temperate climate, and the Haut-Jura (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle) with harsh continental winters and a UNESCO-listed watchmaking heritage. Lakeside (200-500 m): a temperate climate comparable to Lake Geneva, with 1,500-1,650 hours of sunshine a year. Haut-Jura (1,000 m+): a continental climate with winters of -8 to -15°C for several weeks a year and heavy snowfall (roof reinforcement is mandatory for PV). Fog is frequent along the shore in winter.
La Chaux-de-Fonds is UNESCO-listed for its watchmaking town plan: its carefully laid-out chessboard roofscape means PV integration via solar tiles is mandatory within the listed perimeter. The lakeside (Boudry, Cortaillod, Auvernier) has many stone winegrowers' houses — on-roof mounting is possible, but full-black is required.

Many villas and apartment buildings in the Haut-Jura (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle) have cast-iron radiators sized for 65-75°C. To keep the existing system without major renovation, we install high-temperature heat pumps (Daikin Altherma 3 H HT, Stiebel Eltron WPL 25 HT) that can deliver 70°C while still maintaining a respectable COP (2.5-3).
In La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, snow loads can exceed 250 kg/m². Always check the panels' snow-load rating (5,400 Pa minimum) and reinforce the mounting substructure. We work with Schletter / K2 frames tested in alpine conditions.

The canton of Neuchâtel channels the federal Buildings Programme and tops it up with cantonal grants for heat pumps, insulation and PV in whole-building renovations. The whole-building renovation bonus is particularly attractive for poorly insulated Haut-Jura villas.
The canton offers substantial grants for replacing oil or gas boilers with heat pumps. An additional bonus applies if the replacement happens before the existing system reaches the end of its technical life.

Yes, with the right precautions. Air-to-water heat pumps lose performance at -10°C and below. For the Haut-Jura we offer either a reinforced air-to-water unit with limited electric backup (perfectly acceptable when properly sized) or a ground-source (geothermal) heat pump that holds a COP of 4+ even in deep cold. The extra cost of geothermal is generally recouped in 8-10 years thanks to the higher COP.
